Abstract

Pressure ulcers can occur for innumerable factors in critical patients, mainly in ones in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This study was carried out with the objective to describe to nursing personnel and family members the process to prevent pressure ulcer. This is a descriptive and qualitative research. A number of 12 technicians, 01 nurse, and 52 family members of patients were involved in the study from February to May, 2005. According to the statements from the participants before and after nursing care orientation, home care is “simple and easy” and that the instrument to evaluate risk patients (Branden Scale) is of “easy application”. It was observed that, for the majority of family members and/or caretakers, there was a great satisfaction in being able to, with simple procedures, prevent pressure ulcers and provide more comfort to a patient in the family or in an intensive care unit
