Abstract

Lead is a toxic metal used in munitions. Recent studies have shown indications of oxidative stress in mice treated with lead acetate. Our work had the goal of evaluating the possible correlation of lead and oxidative stress in human outdoor and indoor marksmen. The lead concentration was measured by atomic absorption. Oxidative stress was accessed through the reaction products with tiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and the total antioxidant capacity was appraised using Total Antioxidant Status (RANDOX®). The results show that 12,5% of the outdoor and 20,8% of the indoor marksmen present lead values over what is considered normal in non-exposed groups. TBARS were significantly higher for marksmen than for the control group. No statistically significant differences in the total serum antioxidant capacity were observed in individuals tested.
