Abstract

Aiming to determine the factor restricting cultivation in abandoned Luvisol and Fluvic Neosol areas, the electrical conductivity (EC) and phosphorus levels of samples from the 0-20 cm layer were compared to those of an adjacent cultivated area. Texture and pH were also measured. EC was above 7 dS m-1 in most of the Neosol abandoned area samples and above 4 dS m-1in the Luvisol samples, while all samples from the cultivated areas were below 4 dS m-1. Phosphorus and pH had values suitable for plants, except for low P in the Luvisol abandoned area. The texture ranged from loamy to sandy. Salinity proved to be the limiting factor in both abandoned areas, while low P level may be a limiting factor in the Luvisol area.
