Abstract

Crop water monitoring is important for a detailed irrigation control. It is desirable to develop reliable and portable techniques to properly assess the water uptake of agricultural crops. An experiment was conducted in the IAC/Jundiaí, state of São Paulo aiming to achieve such developments. An integrated system based on heat pulse technique was designed and built in order to assess water uptake. Different probe configurations were tested, aiming to find the best sensor profile for field usage. Field and laboratory grown maize were used to calibrate the system. Testing the system on maize stems resulted in a coherent relationship between heat transport and sap flux, for two of the sensor configurations tested. Field results of water uptake determination, obtained comparatively with standard methodology, agreed with the daily-paired data and yielded reasonable values based on statistical Willmot index.
