Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study a distinct category of upper Paraná river fishermen’s’ ecological knowledge in a specific environment, locally called ‘varjão’ (big meadow). That knowledge is reported in seven sentences describing changes to which ‘varjão’ was imposed and also its anthropogenic activity. Results showed that three fishers’ statements are in agreement with the region scientific knowledge. However, the other four statements reveal a popular interpretation of some unknown or scientifically non-corroborated events. Therefore, the study points out that gaps in scientific research may be addressed to popular wisdom. Parallel with that, it also reveals that in the last few years fishers have stored significant ecological feeling of the ecosystem changes and impacts in fishing practice.

Adriana Rosa Carvalho, UEG

Pós-doutorado em co-manejo pesqueiro pela Universidade de Cape Town (Africa do Sul) em 2007 na Unidade de Avaliação Ambiental (EEU), depto. de Ciências Geográficas e Ambientais. Doutora em Ecologia de Ambientes Aquáticos Continentais pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá/NUPELIA (2002). Mestre em Ciências da Engenharia Ambiental pela USP (Universidade de São Paulo) em 1995 e graduada em Licenciatura em Ciências Biológicas pela UNESP de Rio Claro (Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho) em 1992. Atualmente é professora titular da Universidade Estadual de Goiás, campus de Anápolis. Compõe o quadro permanente de professores do Programa de Mestrado em Ecologia e Evolução da Universidade Federal de Goiás. Tem experiência na área de Ecologia, com ênfase em Economia Ecológica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: limnologia, cerrado, diversidade, co-manejo da pesca, socioeconomia pesqueira e valoração econômica Currículo Lattes
