Abstract

This study aimed to answer the following question: what are the appropriate soft technologies for taking care of diabetes mellitus patients? The study consisted of a secondary analysis of a previous investigation to discover healthy ways to deal with diabetic conditions. The original study sample consisted of 11 diabetes mellitus patients. The framework of the present study is the technology model by Merhy et al. (1997), with the following classification: hard technology, soft - hard technology and soft technology. The secondary analysis employed narrative technique. The results show that patients' space is filled with negative signs, showing that something is not working well and pointing out to a lack of human relationship. Such signs provide the building of a new care model focusing receptive actions, autonomy and bonds between patients and health workers.
