Abstract

This study was realised to determinate the breastfeeding status in children under one year old born on Hospital Universitário of Maringá, PR and the factors related to mother's option in breastfeeding their babies. A retrospective study included 338 children to of 888 born in this Hospital over one year. The mothers were found and were interviewed about social-economics variables and about their child feeding since their birth. The results showed that 307 mothers (92,61%) started the breastfeeding on the Hospital but on the and of the first month at least 35,83% these children had been receiving breast milk and teas and 12,37% had been receiving cow milk. In the fourth month 75,24% these infants had been teas and 46,25% on this month had been receiving cow milk. In the sixty month only 3,25% of these babies were on exclusive breastfeeding. The mother's age; the previous experience on breastfeeding; the birth weight and gestation age was variables that had an influence on mother's option in breastfeed. The schooling; the work outside home; the familial income; the pre-natal assistance and mother's orientation about breastfeeding didn't have influence on mother's option in breastfeeding their babies. The breastfeeding duration was on mean 8,15 months but the exclusive breastfeeding pattern quickly falls from the infant first month. It is necessary to invest on measure more efficient to incentive and support maternal- infant health service to breastfeeding.

Atualmente é Professor associado da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Tem experiência na área de Medicina , com ênfase em Saúde Materno-Infantil.
