Abstract

Acute respiratory infections are the causes of morbidity and mortality during infancy and childhood. Their increasing manifestation and transmission in day-care centers have demanded greater attention for children’ care in such institutions. Current research investigates prevention and care activities provided by educational monitors of day-care center in Cascavel, Paraná State, Brazil, with regard to acute respiratory infections. A qualitative research was undertaken with 12 educational monitors between November and December 2008, by means of a semi-structured recorded interview. Salient aspects of the interviews were analyzed and discussed by José Ricardo Carvalho Mesquita Ayres. The educational monitors’ activities on acute respiratory infections have a curative character since they are based on technical care and an understanding of their causes. However, such factors as movement, interaction, reconstruction of identities and alterity, non-causality, plasticity, temporality and responsibility which are comprised in integral care are still lacking. Emphasis should be given on the preparation of monitors and institutions catering for integral care. The above may be supplemented by articulations between educational centers and health services and consequently promoting strategies for the control, prevention and promotion of the children’s health.
