Abstract

This article presents the application of two methodologies in the interpretation of Tupinambá religion. The functionalism leads to the conclusion that religion determined the other levels of society. On theother hand, the materialism approach concludes that it is the economy which determined the other levels, inclu ding the sphere of religion. Both approaches operate with a totality perspective of society. The difference is that the materialism takes into consideration the historical time category.

Possui graduação em Filosofia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1988) , graduação em Sociologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1983) , graduação em Jornalismo pela Universidade de São Paulo (1978) , mestrado em Ciência Política pela Universidade de São Paulo (1994) e doutorado em Ciência Política pela Universidade de São Paulo (1998) . Atualmente é Professor Adjunto da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Tem experiência na área de Ciência Política.
