Abstract

Study developed with nine families of chronic patients that aimed to evaluate the overload and the changes in daily family caregivers of individuals which experience chronicity of a disease in a family context. As methodological strategy was used a qualitative approach, with thematic content analysis of Bardin, using an assessment instrument of caregiver overload. The outstanding events identified were: the impact of care; the interpersonal relationship between caregiver and the sick; the caregiver perspectives in the face of care and the perception of self-efficacy about the performance of his role as caregiver. It is essential to assess the health condition of the family caregivers and the way they face the overload, in order to know the needs of interventional and appropriate forms not only for the sick, but for the whole family. The nursing assistance for families is necessary especially when they have difficulties in conducting the caregiving process, in order to enable them, through guidance, education and assistance.
