Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the orientations received from puerperal women about contraceptive methods during prenatal and puerperium. This is a descriptive, transversal and quantitative study. 358 puerperal women hospitalized in gynecology and obstetrics’ ward of Hospital of Clinics of Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro – UFTM, Uberaba-MG took part in this study. Data collection was done during three months’ time, in 2009. The answers were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results showed that the majority of puerperal women did not receive orientations about contraceptive methods during prenatal (67.5%) and puerperium (94.5%). During prenatal, the physician and the nurse were the main responsible ones for the orientations, 36.8% and 32.5% respectively, and several methods were guided (57.9%). During puerperium, the physician was the most mentioned one (89.5%) and tubal ligation (36.8%) was the main method guided. The orientations about contraceptive methods during prenatal and puerperium were considered low frequent. The assistance to family planning during these two moments is essential to guarantee puerperal women’s reproductive rights.
