Abstract

ABSTRACT: In many studies and research, the idea of development is still associated solely with economic growth. However, in the last four decades, new contributions have been introduced to the academic and political debate, among which the following stand out: social development, sustainable development, human development, and territorial development. The main objective of this article is to provide a critical reflection on the concept of development. To this end, it examines the transformations that have occurred over time, highlighting the transition from development as a synonym for economic growth to a multidimensional perspective based on territorial development. This is an interdisciplinary research that seeks to synthesize the contributions of Geography, Economics, and Administration. It uses a bibliographic survey (books, book chapters, and articles) followed by a critical analysis of the subject in question. It is hoped that the presented results can contribute to a new perspective on development, considering the interrelation between social, political, environmental, cultural, and economic issues.
