Abstract

The essay is about the formation of the social identity of highschool teachers during the second half of the 19th century. The study was based on information on the teaching career, academic production and activities, and social interactions of 78 teachers of the Pedro II School, in the Neutral Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, and the Niterói Normal School, in the Province of Rio de Janeiro. Our study pointed out the formation of a group of intellectuals that began identifying themselves as teachers, remaining men of letters, but aggregating a specific connotation, the activity of teaching.
