Abstract

This paper deals with the semantics fluctuationof the terms related to the notion of ‘destiny’, as ‘acidente, fatalidade, sorte’, among other words semantically related. The main objective is to analyze the semantic changes taking as start point Michel Breal’s historical and pragmatical approaches. So we base our points of view on a brief theoretical incursion about the author, concerning his philosophical and psychological foundations upon which he builds his semantics theory. We discuss the notions of restriction and amplification of meaning, and the relationship of these terms with the logical terms, intension and extension, and polysemy. At the end, we analyze each term, with its derivatives and composed and textual lexies, including examples of popular music and literary texts.
