Abstract

The increasing use of social media by physicians has led them to reflect on their online presence and how to apply the Medical Code of Ethics while maintaining professionalism. In this regard, this study aimed to analyze profiles of physicians on the social media platform Instagram®, comparing their online behavior with the standards set by the Medical Code of Ethics. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of medical professionals and faculty members of medical schools in Rio Grande do Norte, who maintained public and professional profiles on the social media platform. The outcome variable was the adherence or non-adherence to the Medical Code of Ethics of 2018 and Federal Council of Medicine resolutions No. 1,974/11 and No. 2,126/15, along with the identification of infractions in their posts. Results revealed issues such as patient exposure, lack of identification of the physician's professional registration number with the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM) and Specialist Qualification Registry (RQE), informal consultations, commercialization of medical practice, and guaranteeing results as the most prevalent infractions among professionals' accounts. It was concluded that by identifying the weaknesses in online medical practice, measures can be developed to alert these professionals about necessary adjustments in their online presence. Medical educators also bear the responsibility of imparting the need for adherence to the Code of Ethics to their students, serving as examples for future physicians who will likely use social media for professional marketing and societal education.
